The dataset presents organic layer depth and chemical properties of the mineral topsoil of the 15 Respect permanent 1-ha plots at five different study sites (Laipuna 600m, laipuna 1200m, Bombuscaro 1000m, San Francisco 2000m, Cajanuma 3000m). Samples of the upper 10cm of mineral soil from each subplot were taken in May and June 2022. The air-dried samples were analyzed at the Department of Plant Ecology, Göttingen University, Germany, applying a standard protocol for the chemical analysis of forest soils (Unger et al. 2010). 
Soil pH (H2O) was measured in soil suspended in deionized water. The total concentrations of C and N were determined with a C/N elemental analyzer through gas chromatography (Vario EL III, elementar, Hanau, Germany) in the ground and dried soil. P availability was estimated as resin-exchangeable P, i.e., the exchange of phosphate ions by anion exchange resin, which may give a minimum estimate of plant-available P (Pav). The plant availability of Ca, K and Mg and also of potentially toxic Al was quantified by salt exchange (0.2 N BaCl2 solution). The concentrations of exchangeable potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca) and aluminium (Al) were analyzed using ICP-OES (Thermo Scientific iCAP 7000, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Germany).
