The study area of RESPECT is the biodiversity hotspot of the Andes of southern Ecuador with two specific locations comprising a large abiotic gradient from the mountain rain forest to the mountain dry forest including an extensive elevation (and thus thermal) gradient from 600 to 3,000 m a.s.l., as well as vertical and horizontal moisture gradients typical for the biodiversity hotspot of the south Ecuadorian Andes.
