Abstract: Conclusion of the control experiment: -Spraying with Combo is the most efficient, low cost- and least manpower-requiring treatment. -On the other hand, the commonly used concentrations of this herbicide resulted in high mortality rates of all other components of the vegetation. -Half of the application rate of Combo in combination with cutting reduces the impact on other vegetation dramatically, but is still highly efficient with respect to bracken. -Black-foil & cutting, or cutting alone proved as the best method for bracken control if herbicides are not allowed and other vegetation should be preserved.

Abstract: Monthly measurements of bracken and Setaria sphacelata cover and leaf height before and after burning or mowing, respectively, on 1m2 plots. Additionally, reference plots without treatment were included in the dataset. Three vegetation types were observed at an abandoned pasture site: pure bracken stands (A), pure Setaria stands (S), and mixed stands of both (M). Burning (first burn of the experimental fire area) were applied at 2008-9-25 and mowing was realized between 2008-10-3 and 2008-10-7.

LAI table: LAI measurements were allways taken with the 90° view cap because of the small plot size, 4 points per plot (2 from the left and 2 from the right slope paralell plot border) with 2 above and below measurements each, sensor direction was allways looking from the border into the plot. The given attributes were calculated using the FV2000 Software version 1.11 from LICOR. The 5th sensor ring was excluded before the calculations because the plots were located at steep slopes.

Abstract: Nocturnal moths were sampled on 20 plots during three periods between 1999 and 2000 using light traps equipped with two backlight 15 W tubes operated between 18:30 and 21:30 local time (UTC-5:00). Half of the subsamples were randomly selected and manually treated by cutting back all competing herbaceous species with a machete every 4 months from 2003 to 2005. Competing species refers to dominant, exotic and aggressive species such as grasses (S. sphacelata) in the Pasture site, and exotic fern (P. arachnoideum) in the Bracken and Shrub sites, woody native species were not removed.

Additional info: Remarks: Estimating RubisCO is very complicated and the quality of the data depends on: 1 Extractibilty of proteins from the leaves, separation of proteins as bands by SDS-Gel electrophoresis, quality of the gel runs including the standard curve, quantification of the bands by densitometry. N-content of RubisCO: There are almost no data in the literature. Known amino acid sequences of 4 RubisCO Large Subunit (which was quantified) were aligned and from the amino acids the average N-content was calculated. RubisCO Small Subunit : RubisCO Large Subunit = 1 : 1. From the amino acid sequences of the RubisCO Small Subunit the average N-content was calculated. N-contents of both subunits yields the N-content of RubisCO. Further errors can originate from weighting of the samples and determination of the Dry Weight. Estimating chlorophyll is technically easier, but chlorophyll extractibility depends a lot on the leaf structure and chemical constituents of the leaves which could destroy the light sensible chlorophyll molecule once it is released from the chloroplasts. Chlorophyll was determined as chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b and the values in the table is the total chlorophyll content (Chl a + b) on a Dry Weight basis. The ratio is a rough measure of antenna chlorophyll because chl b occurs only in the antrennas while chl a is antenna + reaction center. RubisCO and chlorophyll: Each leaf sample was investigated in triplicate and where SD is given in the Table, the values are averages of the three parallels. For the amount of RubisCO, SD cannot be determined as the value was upscaled from the RubisCO Large Subunit. The same holds for the N-content of RubisCO. N-Contents of the leaves were provided by Jürgen Homeier. Red numbers indicate questionable data. From the few examples in theliterature (public data bases) a rough estimation of the portion of the N-content of RubiCO is around 40% of the leaf-N, but depending on the field situation (the literature data are from laboratory experiments) the shares may vary. I indicated shares of higher than 60% as questionable (in red); the same holds for chlorophyll contents lower than 2 mg/g DW, although senescent or very hard leaves could show a unusal low chlorophyll content. Is there a tendeny of RubisCO-N with PFT or altitude? I would say NO! Also not with the Chl a/b ratio (what could make sense).
