PHD-Thesis Burneo, Juan Ignacio: "Dynamic of bioelements in soils along a landuse gradient in the tropical mountainuous rain forest of Southern Ecuador"

Within the scope of the NUMEX experiment in tropical montane forests of South Ecuador, we measured Bray-extracted inorganic P and total P by means of a HNO3 digestion. We tested whether P availability was affected by moderate P and N fertilization along an altitudinal gradient (1000, 2000, and 3000m a.s.l.). Therefore, we sampled the organic layer and mineral soil of fertilization (N, P, N+P) and control plots.

Monthly aggregated time series of measured concentrations of Al, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn, C, N, S, P, K, Na, Mg, Ca in litterfall in the ECSF area in the microcatchment Q2. Litterfall was sampled weekly on the 3 transects of Q2 (Q2.1, Q2.2, Q2.3) with 3 polyethylene mesh collectors (0.5 x 0.5 m) per transect. The samples were dried at 40 °C for one week and stored at the ECSF until transport to Germany or Switzerland for chemical analyses. The replicates at upper, middle and lower slope were bulked per transect and collecting interval and the results were subsequently aggregated per month and transect. Samples were ground to <50 µm with a planetary ball mill (Retsch PM200, Haan, Germany) prior to elemental analysis of C, N, and S by thermal combustion (Elementar Analysensysteme, Hanau, Germany) and acid microwave digestion with concentrated HNO3. Element concentrations in the digested samples were measured by AAS, ICP-OES or ICP-MS.

Litterfall was collected on all 20 plots at NUMEX on 6 subplots per plot (A-F) with polyethylene mesh traps (0.6 x 0.6 m). On each plot, two of the six litterfall traps were randomly sampled monthly. The samples were dried at 40 °C for one week and stored at the ECSF until transport to Germany or Switzerland for chemical analyses. The two collected replicates were bulked per plot and collecting interval resulting in one litterfall sample per plot and month. Samples were ground to <50 µm with a planetary ball mill (Retsch PM200, Haan, Germany) prior to elemental analysis of C, N, and S by thermal combustion (Elementar Analysensysteme, Hanau, Germany) and acid microwave digestion with concentrated HNO3. Element concentrations in the digested samples were measured by AAS, ICP-OES or ICP-MS.
