Soil data of NUMEX plots measured in 2013. Percentage of C and N, as well as soil pH were determined.

Fortnightly time series of measured electrical conductivity and pH values in litter leachate at NUMEX San Francisco. The fortnightly time series extends between August 2007 and December 2016. Litter leachate was sampled on the 20 NUMEX plots with zero-tension lysimeters below the organic layer. On each plot 3 replicates were collected, volume-weighted and bulked to one sample per plot. Electrical conductivity and pH values were measured immediately in unfiltered aliquots in the laboratory of the ECSF.

AMF root colonization of roots extracted from the upper soil layer (5cm) at all NUMEX plots. Roots are stained with Trypan Blue, AMF root colonization is examined by the line-intersect method.

Measurements of gas flux (CO2, CH4, N2O) in canopy soils of NUMEX plots on four dates (Sept/Nov 2011 and Jan/April 2012). Measurements were taken in 3 of the 4 NUMEX blocks at each elevation; treatments measured included C, N, NP and P.

Gas fluxes were measured by incubating intact soil cores.
Gas samples were analyzed on a gas chromatograph with a FID and ECD.
Note that the units for CO2 are mg CO2-C m-2 h-1 (not g CO2-C).

Soil aggregation parameters were measured in NUMEX at 1000m in 2013. Water-stable soil aggregates were determined as well as the mean weight diameter of soil based on dry-sieving.

Roots were collected at all NUMEX Plots (ECSF) in January 2009, except Ca treatments. 3 subplots were sampled per plot. Roots were stained with Trypan Blue and the percentage of root colonization determined using the line-intersect method.

Measurement of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AMF) abundance in the NUMEX plots at all elevational sites. AMF root colonization, hyphal length, spore counts and NLFA 16:1w5 marker in soil were determined. Additionally, we quantified non-mycorrhizal fungal root colonization and hyphal length.

Fortnightly time series of measured concentrations of Cl, PO4-P, Total P, NH4-N, NO3-N, Total N, K, Na, Mg, Ca and Total organic C in throughfall at NUMEX San Francisco. The fortnightly time series extends between August 2007 and March 2013. Throughfall was sampled on the 20 NUMEX plots with Hellmann-type collectors. On each plot 20 replicates were collected, volume-weighted and bulked to one sample per plot. Samples were immediately filtered (4-7 µm) in the laboratory of the ECSF  and stored at -20 °C until transport in frozen state to Germany or to Switzerland for concentration measurements.

The dataset includes physical and chemical properties of the organic layer and mineral soil at NUMEX San Francisco during sampling campaigns from 2007 to 2009. Following properties were measured: bulk density, horizon thickness, sand, silt and clay content, concentrations of Al, Fe, Mn, Zn, C, N, S, P, K, Na, Mg, Ca, cation exchange capacity, exchangeable cations Ca, Na, Mg, K, Al, Fe, delta 13C and delta 15N values. Arbuscular mycorrhizal root colonization (%), colonized root length (cm/cm³) and fine root parameters in response to nutrient additions (N, P and NP) are reported. Samples were taken in October 2010 at the NUMEX plots at 2000m.

Monthly measurement of soil temperature and soil gas fluxes (CO2, N2O) in the NUMEX plots in Bombuscaro, ECSF und Cajanuma

Monthly measurements of gas fluxes were performed using static vented chambers.
Soil temperature was taken simultaneously with gas measurements.

For the seedling transplantation experiment conducted in NUMEX plots in Bombuscaro using as a target species Pouteria torta for monitoring during one year the effects of fertilization in a common species. This data set correspond to the initial measurements of the experiment
