Abstract:

Volumetric water content was measured every 30 minutes with FDR sensors at Plot 13 of NUMEX San Francisco in the organic layer and in 10 cm, 20 cm, 30 cm and 40 cm mineral soil depth. Data was recorded with a dataloger and aggregated to hourly values. Missing data are indicated by "NULL".

Analyses if morphological and physiological attributes of seedlings from the two most common species in NUMEX experiment at the three elevations. Changes in this attributes are altered by nutrient availability in this case fertilization might showed specific limitation for N or P.

Fortnightly time series of measured concentrations of Cl, PO4-P, Total P, NH4-N, NO3-N, Total N, K, Na, Mg, Ca and Total organic C in litter leachate at NUMEX San Francisco. The fortnightly time series extends between August 2007 and March 2013. Litter leachate was sampled on the 20 NUMEX plots with tero-tension lysimeters below the organic layer. On each plot 3 replicates were collected, volume-weighted and bulked to one sample per plot. Samples were immediately filtered (4-7 µm) in the laboratory of the ECSF and stored at -20 °C until transport in frozen state to Germany or to Switzerland for concentration measurements.

Weekly time series of water fluxes, pH, electrical conductivity and measured concentrations of Al, Cu, Mn, Zn, Cl, PO4-P, Total P, NH4-N, NO3-N, Total N, S, K, Na, Mg, Ca and Total organic C in stem flow in the ECSF area in the microcatchment Q2. The weekly time series extends between March 1998 and December 2016. Stem flow was sampled weekly in Q2.1 with polyurethane collars on 5 representative tree species: Piptocoma discolor (Kunth) Pruski, Heliocarpus americanus L., Sapium glandulosum (L.) Morong, Cyathea caracasana (Klotzsch) Domin, Cecropia angustifolia Trécul. The five stem flow samples were collected, volume-weighted and bulked to one sample per per collecting interval. Herbivory estimated as leaf area loss [cm^2] and [%] and leaf traits were generated from sun-exposed leaves of 380 tree canopies belonging to 51 tree species (7 +/- 1 tree individual per species) located within the nine 1 ha forest core plots at 1000 m (Bombuscaro), 2000 m (San Francisco), and 3000 m (Cajanuma) in the Podocarpus Nationalpark and the Reserva Biológica San Francisco in southern Ecuador between February and March in 2019.
To estimate herbivory, 20 +/- 5 leaves per tree were scanned and analyzed with the software WinFOLIA. Leaf traits were either measured conventionally with morphometrical and chemical measurement techniques or spectrally with an OceanOptics spectrometer HDX to identify the reflectance wavebands of certain molecular foliar structures.

Monthly time series of measured concentrations of Al, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn, C, N, S, P, K, Na, Mg, Ca in litterfall at NUMEX San Francisco between 2007 and 2013. Litterfall was collected on all 20 plots at NUMEX on 6 subplots per plot (A-F) with polyethylene mesh traps (0.6 x 0.6 m). On each plot, two of the six litterfall traps were randomly sampled monthly. The samples were dried at 40 °C for one week and stored at the ECSF until transport to Germany or Switzerland for chemical analyses. The two collected replicates were bulked per plot and collecting interval resulting in one litterfall sample per plot and month. Samples were ground to <50 µm with a planetary ball mill (Retsch PM200, Haan, Germany) prior to elemental analysis of C, N, and S by thermal combustion (Elementar Analysensysteme, Hanau, Germany) and acid microwave digestion with concentrated HNO3. Element concentrations in the digested samples were measured by AAS, ICP-OES or ICP-MS.
