Abstract:

The dataset includes physical properties of the mineral soils on forest and pasture core plots in San Francisco during the sampling campaigns in 2018 and 2019. Three soil profiles were established on each core plot. Respresentative samples were taken from each horizon, dried and transported to Germany for laboratory analyses. Bulk density was measured in the topsoil with undisturbed soil cores. Soil texture was measured with a combined sieving and pipetting method after oxidation of organic matter and chemical dispersion of aggregates.

Abstract:

Weekly time series of precipitation data from the San Francisco area at 2000 m a.s.l. at the measuring station FN3 located at the climate station on T2. Precipitation was measured with 5 Hellmann-type pluviometers. The resulting weekly replicates of precipitation were volume-weighted and bulked to one sample per collecting interval. Electrical conductivity and pH values were measured immediately in unfiltered aliquots in the laboratory at the ECSF.

The dataset includes chemical properties of the mineral soil associated with the PFT trees species of the core plots in Bombuscaro, San Francisco and Cajanuma. The samples were taken during sampling campaigns in 2018 and 2019. Respresentative samples were taken from the mineral soil at five locations close to each tree from 0-10 cm mineral soil depth, bulked in the field, dried at 40 °C at the ECSF and transported to Germany for laboratory analyses. Total carbon, nitrogen and sulfur were measured by elemental analysis via thermal combustion in milled aliquots. Available P was measured in the < 2mm soil fraction after extraction by the Olsen method with 0.5 M NaHCO3 and measurement by continuous flow analysis.

Fortnightly time series of measured electrical conductivity and pH values in soil solution (15 cm mineral soil depth) at NUMEX San Francisco. The fortnightly time series extends between August 2007 and December 2016. Soil solution was sampled on the 20 NUMEX plots with ceramic suction cups having a pore size of 1 µm installed at 15 cm depth in the mineral soil. On each plot 3 replicates were collected and bulked to one sample per plot. Electrical conductivity and pH values were measured immediately in unfiltered aliquots in the laboratory of the ECSF.

Monthly time series of d13C and d15N isotope measurements in litterfall at NUMEX San Francisco between 2007 and 2009. Litterfall was collected on all 20 plots at NUMEX on 6 subplots per plot (A-F) with polyethylene mesh traps (0.6 x 0.6 m). On each plot, two of the six litterfall traps were randomly sampled monthly. The samples were dried at 40 °C for one week and stored at the ECSF until transport to Germany or Switzerland for chemical analyses. The two collected replicates were bulked per plot and collecting interval resulting in one litterfall sample per plot and month. Samples were ground to <50 µm with a planetary ball mill (Retsch PM200, Haan, Germany) prior to isotope measurements of d13C and d15N by EA/IRMS (ThermoFisher, Bremen, Germany)
