WP3 Atmospheric modelling

Project staff

Abstract:

The main objective of WP3 is to produce a spatially distributed data set on weather and climate of the entire Galápagos archipelago at very high spatial (2 km grid spacing) and temporal (1 h intervals) resolution. It is particularly used for analyzing spatio-temporal patterns and variability of precipitation with special focus on anomalies caused by ENSO events. Data from the ERA5 reanalysis are dynamically downscaled using the WRF model analogously to method for producing the HAR data set (cf. www.klima.tu-berlin.de/HAR). The new data set entitled “Galápagos Archipelago Refined analysis (GAR)” will cover the 25-year time period from 1996 to 2020 and extended for the duration of the project. AWS data from WP1 are used to optimize model parametrization and for testing the downscaling results. Simulated data e.g. on wind field, air humidity and air temperature are used to analyze the atmospheric forcing of rain formation in space and time across-scales.
