The sample is mixed with a potassium peroxodisulfate and organic phosphates are destructed by means of UV digestion. Sulfuric acid is added to the sample stream and the solution and complex inorganic phosphates are digested at 110 °C to ortho-phosphate. Sodium hydroxide is added to neutralise the solution which is dialysed against distilled water. Ammonium heptamolybdate catalysed by potassium antimony(III) oxide tartrate reacts in an acidic medium with diluted solutions of phosphate to form a phospho-molybdic acid complex. This complex is reduced in an intensely blue colored complex by L(+)ascorbic acid. This complex is measured at 880 nm. |

After on-line dialysis, the sample is buffered at pH 8.2 and is passed through a column containing granulated copper-cadmium to reduce the nitrate to nitrite, which is determined by diazotizing with sulfanilamide and coupling with N-(1-naphthyl)ethylenediamine dihydrochloride to form a highly coloured azo dye which is measured at 540 nm. The determination of NO3-N concentrations by cadmium reduction usually includes a small amount of originally present nitrite-N (NO2-N), which was below the detection limits and hence considered negligible. |
