Environmental changes in biodiversity hotspot ecosystems of
South Ecuador: RESPonse and feedback effECTs (FOR2730)

Abstract:

Biodiversity and ecosystem functions are highly threatened by global change. It has been proposed that geodiversity can be used as an easy-to-measure surrogate of biodiversity to guide conservation management. However, so far, there is mixed evidence to what extent geodiversity can predict biodiversity and ecosystem functions at the regional scale relevant for conservation planning. Here, we analyse how geodiversity computed as a compound index is suited to predict the diversity of four taxa and associated ecosystem functions in a tropical mountain hotspot of biodiversity and compare the results with the predictive power of environmental conditions and resources (climate, habitat, soil). We show that combinations of these environmental variables better explain species diversity and ecosystem functions than a geodiversity index and identified climate variables as more important predictors than habitat and soil variables, although the best predictors differ between taxa and functions. We conclude that a compound geodiversity index cannot be used as a single surrogate predictor for species diversity and ecosystem functions in tropical mountain rain forest ecosystems and is thus little suited to facilitate conservation management at the regional scale. Instead, both the selection and the combination of environmental variables are essential to guide conservation efforts to safeguard biodiversity and ecosystem functions.

Abstract:

The amount of carbon stored in deadwood is equivalent to about 8per cent of the global forest carbon stocks1. The decomposition of deadwood is largely governed by climate2–5 with decomposer groups—such as microorganisms and insects—contributing to variations in the decomposition rates2,6,7. At the global scale, the contribution of insects to the decomposition of deadwood and carbon release remains poorly understood7. Here we present a field experiment of wood decomposition across 55 forest sites and 6 continents. We find that the deadwood decomposition rates increase with temperature, and the strongest temperature effect is found at high precipitation levels. Precipitation affects the decomposition rates negatively at low temperatures and positively at high temperatures. As a net effect—including the direct consumption by insects and indirect effects through interactions with microorganisms—insects accelerate the decomposition in tropical forests (3.9% median mass loss per year). In temperate and boreal forests, we find weak positive and negative effects with a median mass loss of 0.9per cent and −0.1per cent per year, respectively. Furthermore, we apply the experimentally derived decomposition function to a global map of deadwood carbon synthesized from empirical and remote-sensing data, obtaining an estimate of 10.93.2petagram of carbon per year released from deadwood globally, with 93per cent originating from tropical forests. Globally, the net effect of insects may account for 29per cent of the carbon flux from deadwood, which suggests a functional importance of insects in the decomposition of deadwood and the carbon cycle.

Abstract:

Forest plantations with exotic species in southern Ecuador have mostly been characterized as having negative externalities in both ecological and economic terms. After ten years of research in mountain forests in southern Ecuador on restoration and reforestation, several native tree species with good growth responses (e.g. Handroanthus chrysanthus, Cedrela montana and Juglans neotropica) have been identified in open field conditions. Some species (e.g. Podocarpus oleifolius and P. sprucei) were able to grow under the shelter provided by Pinus and Alnus trees.

Abstract:

The dry forest of southern Ecuador and northern Perú (called the Tumbesian region) is known for its high diversity, endemism, and healthy conservation state. Nevertheless, the forest is exposed to many threats linked with human activities. To understand the effects of these threats, which have not been appropriately assessed, we pose two questions: (a) What are the diversity and structural situations of the forest? (b) Are anthropogenic activities affecting the composition and structure of the forest? The assessed factors were species richness, diversity, species similarity, abundance, and density. Forest information was obtained from 72 plots (total area 25.92 ha) randomly placed to cover a wide range of stand densities (from 200 to 1100 m a.s.l.). After constructing linear mixed models and selecting the most influential one, we determined the individual influences of 12 predictors. The human pressure index (HPI) was the most negative predictor of forest health, and annual precipitation was the most important abiotic predictor of good health conditions. Livestock grazing did not significantly change the diversity and structure of mature forest. The mean annual temperature and stoniness influenced only the basal area and number of individuals, respectively. The species composition in our study area was not affected by the HPI, but was strongly predicted by annual precipitation.

Abstract:

Abstract Conversion of tropical forests is among the primary causes of global environmental change. The loss of their important environmental services has prompted calls to integrate ecosystem services (ES) in addition to socio-economic objectives in decision-making. To test the effect of accounting for both ES and socio-economic objectives in land-use decisions, we develop a new dynamic approach to model deforestation scenarios for tropical mountain forests. We integrate multi-objective optimization of land allocation with an innovative approach to consider uncertainty spaces for each objective. These uncertainty spaces account for potential variability among decision-makers, who may have different expectations about the future. When optimizing only socio-economic objectives, the model continues the past trend in deforestation (1975–2015) in the projected land-use allocation (2015–2070). Based on indicators for biomass production, carbon storage, climate and water regulation, and soil quality, we show that considering multiple ES in addition to the socio-economic objectives has heterogeneous effects on land-use allocation. It saves some natural forest if the natural forest share is below 38%, and can stop deforestation once the natural forest share drops below 10%. For landscapes with high shares of forest (38%–80% in our study), accounting for multiple ES under high uncertainty of their indicators may, however, accelerate deforestation. For such multifunctional landscapes, two main effects prevail: (a) accelerated expansion of diversified non-natural areas to elevate the levels of the indicators and (b) increased landscape diversification to maintain multiple ES, reducing the proportion of natural forest. Only when accounting for vascular plant species richness as an explicit objective in the optimization, deforestation was consistently reduced. Aiming for multifunctional landscapes may therefore conflict with the aim of reducing deforestation, which we can quantify here for the first time. Our findings are relevant for identifying types of landscapes where this conflict may arise and to better align respective policies.

Abstract:

Land-use and climate change are major threats to biodiversity and ecosystem functions. Most of the current biodiversity monitoring systems are based on periodic records of the populations of a set of threatened or popular ‘flagship’ indicator species. In contrast to the abundance-based monitoring of species, also specific indicators of processes and functional interactions in an ecosystem may become targets of a more functional monitoring which can unveil early responses of an ecosystem to environmental changes at different spatial and temporal scales. The contributions of this Special Issue present such functional indicators for assessing and predicting responses to environmental changes of ecosystem functions in a hotspot of tropical biodiversity.

Abstract:

Ant assemblages are sensitive to abiotic changes in the environment, therefore they are widely used as indicators of environmental changes. Previous studies demonstrated that abiotic changes with elevation and increased anthropogenic disturbance not only reduce species richness of ant assemblages, but also modify their trophic composition and nutrient use. In tropical ecosystems where nutrient availability may vary between dry and wet seasons, seasonal or interactive effects might play an important but still neglected role in shaping these patterns. Here I used standardized bait experiments in natural and disturbed sites along an elevation gradient in a tropical montane rainforest during the wet and dry season. In order to analyze the single and interactive effects of elevation, disturbance and season on species richness, nutrient use and trophic composition of ants, I used linear mixed effect models. Additionally, I used principal component analysis (PCA) to assess whether morphological traits of ants are linked to their nutrient use. Species richness decreased monotonically along the elevation gradient, with a stronger decline in the dry season. Forest disturbance had no significant effect on species richness. The relative use of most nutrients decreased with increasing elevation. Forest disturbance only affected the relative use of lipids by decreasing it compared to natural forests. However, my results revealed complex interactive effects of elevation, disturbance and season on species richness and the use of nutrients by ant assemblages. Furthermore, I found a shift from predominantly omnivore species to more predatory species with increasing elevation. PCA revealed a preference of lipid baits by species with morphological traits associated with predatory taxa. My findings highlight the importance of seasonality and mixed effects on the composition of ant assemblages and their nutrient use in a tropical montane forest. Additionally, these results highlight the value of disturbed forests within my study area, since they support similar species richness and trophic composition of ant assemblages compared to natural forests.

Abstract:

The worldwide demand for large scale biodiversity monitoring systems is challenging for recent remote sensing techniques. For monitoring changes in species as well as functional diversity the consideration of ecosystem processes is crucial. Herbivory as a focal function in tropical forest ecosystems is therefore being investigated in this study. Aim of the study is to reveal the potential of remotely sensed image textures for predicting herbivory. For this leaf area loss (LAL) due to herbivory has been quantified in different vegetation layers of a tropical mountain forest in the Ecuadorian Andes. The study area is a structurally highly complex region along an elevation gradient from 1000 to 3000 m a.s.l. with undisturbed primary forest and disturbed forest fragments within agriculturally used land. It has been proven that LAL has similar patterns as herbivore abundance over the elevation gradient showing it to be a possible proxy for herbivore abundance. Further results show a correlation of LAL data and canopy cover thus local forest structure. Correlations between LAL and image textures as a proxy for vegetation structure were stronger than with pixel wise derived spectral values only. Unveiling the high potential of image textures as a surrogate for herbivory and ecosystem function.

Abstract:

Ecosystems worldwide are threatened by the increasing impact of land use and climate change. To protect their diversity and functionality, spatially explicit monitoring systems are needed. In remote areas, monitoring is difficult and recurrent field surveys are costly. By using Lidar or themore cost-effective and repetitive optical satellite data, remote sensing could provide proxies for habitat structure supporting measures for the conservation of biodiversity. Here we compared the explanatory power of both, airborne Lidar and optical satellite data in modeling the spatial distribution of biodiversity of birds across a complex tropical mountain forest ecosystem in southeastern Ecuador. Weused data fromfield surveys of birds and chose three measures as proxies for different aspects of diversity: (i) Shannon diversity as a measure of ?-diversity that also includes the relative abundance of species, (ii) phylodiversity as a first proxy for functional diversity, and (iii) community composition as a proxy for combined ?- and ?-diversity.We modeled these diversity estimates using partial least-square regression of Lidar and optical texturemetrics separately and compared themodels using a leave-one-out validated R2 and rootmean square error. Bird community informationwas best predicted by both remote sensing datasets, followed by Shannon diversity and phylodiversity. Our findings reveal a high potential of optical texture metrics for predicting Shannon diversity and ameasure of community composition, but not for modeling phylodiversity. Generalizing from the investigated tropical mountain ecosystem, we conclude that texture information retrieved frommultispectral data of operational satellite systems could replace costly airborne laser-scanning formodeling certain aspects of biodiversity.

Abstract:

Tabebuia Bulletin Issue no 4, December 2015 The issue presents a bunch of Science and Knowledge-Transfer News. The first full-length paper in this journal shows in a model how the equilibrium between the pasture grass (Setaria) and the competing weed (bracken) depends on the temperature of the site, in other words on the elevation of the pasture. In the mountain rainforest, tree roots and the mycorrhiza fungi respond species-specifically to nutrient manipulations. Phosphate liberating soil enzymes depend on climatic conditions and thus on the altitudinal gradient. A study of the altitudinal gradient of tree assemblages disproved the general validity of the Tropical Conservatism Hypothesis. Using water use efficiency of the leaves and the total water consumption of the tree allows determination of its daily carbon uptake. Sodium availability could play an essential role in litter decomposition. In the dry forest different tree functional types can be recognized by quantification of their water relations. How to create a soil map for remote or less accessible areas? The Transfer News present a sampling design for digital soil mapping that closes the gap between the statistical desired quality of samples and operational applicability. The high resolution climate indicator system can be used to recognize climate change in southern Ecuador. In a workshop on the National Bird Day researchers from the Platform shared their dedication to bird diversity and seed dispersal with students from Zamora Chinchipe. Two more workshops transferred knowledge about science-directed advances in ecosystem monitoring and about the rehabilitation of abandoned areas for production and protection. More than 50% of the visits of the Data Warehouse are from outside the Research Consortium and climate data are expectedly the champions of downloads. News from the ECSF research station, the infrastructure provider NCI as well as the successful completion of three PhD thesis by Ecuadorian students round off this issue.

After the coordinators’ updating of the state of research and introducing the new name of this publication, they summarize the important elements of the program for knowledge transfer to stakeholders. The local advisory board informs about a landslide which hit research grounds. Science papers in this issue • compare tropical montane elevation transects in Ecuador and Peru • analyze the relationship of decomposer communities and leaf litter types • demonstrate how fertilization influences the amount of bio-available phosphorus • reveal that nutrient availability stimulates mineralization of dissolved organic matter • show that image textures can supersede functional biodiversity analysis • provide insights into the transformation from abandoned sites to valuable pasture land. A report presents the completed construction of the last radar of the RadarNet Sur that is situated on a mountain peak and is the highest operating weather radar worldwide. The Data Warehouse manager describes the results of a survey taken to increase data quality and usability. And two workshops transferred gained knowledge on how to perform terrain analyses with the geographical information system SAGA.

Abstract:

Field studies have shown a wide array of responses of vascular epiphyte diversity to human disturbance-assem- blages of disturbed habitats range from largely unchanged to severely impoverished when compared with intact forest. This variability is not well understood. We explored the hypothesis that the relative impoverishment of disturbed-habitat epiphyte assemblages is a function of local climate, by analyzing the available literature on epiphyte diversity on isolated trees as a model system. We found that assemblages of moist and moderately seasonal areas experience considerably stronger impov- erishment than those of aseasonally wet or distinctly dry areas. We argue that the integrity of the vertical microclimatic gradient is more crucial for the maintenance of epiphyte diversity in moderately seasonal forests than in distinctly dry or aseasonally wet forests.

Abstract:

Systematic investigations of the upper forest line (UFL) primarily concentrate on mid and high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere, whereas studies of Neotropical UFLs are still fragmentary. This article outlines the extraordinary high tree diversity at the UFL within the Andean Depression and unravels the links between the comparatively low position of the local UFL, high tree-species diversity, and climate. On the basis of Gentry?s rapid inventory methodology for the tropics, vegetation sampling was conducted at 12 UFL sites, and local climate (temperature, wind, precipitation, and soil moisture) was investigated at six sites. Monotypic forests dominated by Polylepis were only found at the higher located margins of the Andean Depression while the lower situated core areas were characterized by a species-rich forest, which lacked the elsewhere dominant tree-species Polylepis. In total, a remarkably high tree-species number of 255 tree species of 40 different plant families was found. Beta-diversity was also high with more than two complete species turnovers. A non-linear relationship between the floristic similarity of the investigated study sites and elevation was detected. Temperatures at the investigated study sites clearly exceeded 5.5°C, the postulated threshold value for the upper tree growth limit in the tropics. Instead, quasi-permanent trade winds, high precipitation amounts, and high soil water contents affect the local position of the UFL in a negative way. Interestingly, most of the above-mentioned factors are also contributing to the high species richness. The result is a combination of a clearly marked upper forest line depression combined with an extraordinary forest line complexity, which was an almost unknown paradox.

Abstract:

The first MRp|SE Newsletter offers research and knowledge transfer results: The test of models for small scale plant distributions shows the advantages of ensemble approaches. This result as well as a new method to analyze canopy evapotranspriation and leaf photosynthesis were awarded with poster prizes. A medical technique helps to study wood anatomy. In contrast to previous data the analysis of fertilized phosphorus revealed that it is not only retained in above-ground biomass and the organic layer but also enters the mineral soil. Mean transit times of water in the catchment and transit time distribution functions where modeled and can be related to land use effects. The Newsletter also explains the usefulness of digital soil maps and the prerequisites for developing local climate indicators. The designs of research plots and new research infrastructures are introduced and the characteristics of the second radar in the Radar Net Sur are summarized. Four of the SENESCYT Bundle Projects describe their research objectives. New in the Data Warehouse are a tool for control of funds consumption and a new booking tool. NCI already awaits researchers at the new Laipuna station.

Abstract:

20 groups of scientists representing a multitude of scientific disciplines summarize major results of their research in this last issue of the TMF Newsletter: They report about science-directed and sustainable land-use systems and present protocols for optimization of sustainable forest and pasture management. Specific reactions of species and of the ecosystem tropical mountain forest (TMF) to increasing loads of nutrient input are shown. The researchers also summarize effects of altered precipitation and temperatures on nitrogen fluxes as well as on plant and animal diversity. They furthermore improved their hydrological models of water fluxes. Landscape parameters and forest dynamics were analyzed to improve landslide models. New animal species and mycorrhiza types are presented, mycorrhiza biomass were determined, and it was analyzed which mycorrhizae foster young trees. How environmental change influences climate and the ecosystem is demonstrated. The milestones achieved in the data warehouse are visualized. The researchers also offer new methods and introduce species to successfully monitor global change impacts.

Abstract:

During the Quaternary, in particular during glacial times, different grassland ecosystems played a much larger role and had a significantly larger distribution. Little is known yet about past development, biodiversity and dynamics of grassland ecosystems. In this innovative study, we attempt to distinguish between different South American grassland types in space and time based on morphological pollen grain characteristics of Poaceae. For this purpose[60?80 Poaceae pollen grains of 20 grassland samples were measured using their length, width and pore diameter as well as annulus width. Samples were taken from five sites in wet Pa´ramo vegetation from the Late Pleistocene to the Late Holocene in South Ecuador and from two sites in the south-eastern Brazilian highlands (Campos do Altitude) of the same period. Additionally, we investigated two samples from a Pampa site as well as six samples from one Campos grassland site in southern Brazil from the Late Pleistocene to the Late Holocene. Subsets of samples of the Campos grasslands and of the Pa´ramo were investigated in order to retrieve more detailed information on patterns within these vegetation types. Multivariate data analysis of the complete data set shows changes in taxonomic composition along an elevational gradient in the Pa´ramo grasslands. Our results reveal a highly dynamic development of the individual grassland types; they also provide interesting information on Poaceae taxa composition patterns, development and possibly changes in biodiversity within these ecosystems. Moreover, our data provide an indication about the origin and dynamics of the Campos ecosystems in the southern Brazilian highlands during the Late Pleistocene and the Holocene before and after the onset of human activities.
