Abstract:	This Digital Terrain Model (DTM) is derived from L... Abstract: This Digital Terrain Model (DTM) is derived from LiDAR data. The helicopter-based survey of the Rio San Francisco catchment (between Loja and Zamora in South Ecuador) has been conducted in March 2012. Due to bad weather conditions the survey could not be finished (the upper parts of the mountain lay in clouds). It is expected to be continued in October 2012. So this is a preliminary version of the DSM/DTM dataset, because further harmonization and filtering processes will be adapted to the full LiDAR dataset. The DTM has the high resolution of 1m. Nevertheless, keep the uncertainties of the generation in mind. Detailed QA information can not be given yet. A DSM/DTM derived from a LiDAR mission on such a step terrain must have some restrictions in the accuracy. Based on independent GPS control points measured on plane areas we can confirm a vertical accuracy of the DSM/DTM within 1 meter. You also have to keep in mind that there are many processing steps to derive a raster model from a LiDAR point cloud, which may influence the characteristics of the DTM/DSM (e.g. step walls are smoothed in the raster model). Reflections from power lines, towers and cars are still unclassified. This means that these data is interpreted as part of the DSM and the DTM. The LiDAR survey has been initiated by the working group of Prof. J. Bendix and is financed partly by the University of Marburg. The usage of this preliminary DSM/DTM is restricted to the RU816 members for first evaluation approaches. The usage for publications has to be agreed in advance with Prof. J. Bendix.

Abstract:	The soil texture of the San Francisco catchment wa... Abstract: The soil texture of the San Francisco catchment was regionalised by Random Forest methodology. Data from the topsoil of 212 soil profiles was used to supervise the regionalisation process. In addition to the dataset used by Ließ (2011; PhD thesis included in the database: http://www.tropicalmountainforest.org/publications.do?citid=1017 ), additional soil samples were taken by AG Frede (David Windhorst and Felix Altmann) and analysed by AG Huwe in Bayreuth by pipette methodology. The terrain parameters: elevation, aspect, convergence, valley depth, normalised height, Saga Wetness Index, Topographic Ruggedness Index, wind effect and LS Factor were used as predictive parameters. All terrain parameters were calculated from the 10 m resolution digital elevation model (Ungerechts L. (2010): DEM 10m (triangulated from aerial photo - b/w) . The 50fold texture prediction which was then used to calculate mean and standard deviation was performed based on random 9/10 subsets of the complete dataset. The models were evaluated by the remaining 1/10 test dataset. The prediction of the clay content was evaluated with a median Pearson's rxy of 0.4, the prediction of the sand content was evaluated with a median rxy=0.34. Maximum rxy reached 0.8 for both, clay and sand content. Silt content was predicted as remaining proportion to 100% after subtraction of clay and sand content.

Abstract: The near surface humidity in a megadiverse mountain ecosystem in southern Ecuador is examined on the basis of Relative Humidity (RH) measurements inside the natural mountain forest and at open sites alon an altitudinal gradient from 1700 to 3200 m. The maps in the dataset are the product of a study with the main metodologocal aim to generate a humidity regionalization tool to provide spatial datasets on average monthly mean, minimum and maximum RH, Specific Humidity (q) and Specific Satuartion Deficit (Ds) by using observation data of RH. The maps based on data of the period 1999-2009 can be used by ecologocal projects working on various plots where no climate station data are available.

Abstract:	The maps, based on data of the period 1999-2009, c... Abstract: The maps, based on data of the period 1999-2009, can be used by ecological projects working on various plots where no climate station data are available. The temperature maps are generated by combining a straightforward detrending technique with a Digital Elevation Model and a satellite-based land cover classification which also provides the relative forest cover per pixel. The topical aim of the study was to investigate the thermal structure of both manifestations of our ecosystem (pastures and natural vegetation) with special considerations to the ecosystem temperature regulation services by converting natural forest into pasture.
