Monthly aggregated time series of measured concentrations of Al, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn, C, N, S, P, K, Na, Mg, Ca in litterfall in the ECSF area in the microcatchment Q2. Litterfall was sampled weekly on the 3 transects of Q2 (Q2.1, Q2.2, Q2.3) with 3 polyethylene mesh collectors (0.5 x 0.5 m) per transect. The samples were dried at 40 °C for one week and stored at the ECSF until transport to Germany or Switzerland for chemical analyses. The replicates at upper, middle and lower slope were bulked per transect and collecting interval and the results were subsequently aggregated per month and transect. Samples were ground to <50 µm with a planetary ball mill (Retsch PM200, Haan, Germany) prior to elemental analysis of C, N, and S by thermal combustion (Elementar Analysensysteme, Hanau, Germany) and acid microwave digestion with concentrated HNO3. Element concentrations in the digested samples were measured by AAS, ICP-OES or ICP-MS.

Monthly mean nutrient and element concentrations in soil solution and monthly sum of litterfall from Q2.3. Soil solution was sampled from below the organic layer (lysimeter), 15cm and 30cm depth. Monthly means were calculated from weekly measurements. The measured nutrients and elements comprise: pH, PO4-P, Ptot, Cl, NH4-N, NO3-N, Ntot, DOC, Ca, K, Mg, Na.

Monthly means were calculated from weekly measurements. The measured nutrients and elements comprise: pH, PO4-P, Ptot, Cl, NH4-N, NO3-N, Ntot, DOC, Ca, K, Mg, Na.

Monthly time series of d13C and d15N isotope measurements in litterfall at NUMEX San Francisco between 2007 and 2009. Litterfall was collected on all 20 plots at NUMEX on 6 subplots per plot (A-F) with polyethylene mesh traps (0.6 x 0.6 m). On each plot, two of the six litterfall traps were randomly sampled monthly. The samples were dried at 40 °C for one week and stored at the ECSF until transport to Germany or Switzerland for chemical analyses. The two collected replicates were bulked per plot and collecting interval resulting in one litterfall sample per plot and month. Samples were ground to <50 µm with a planetary ball mill (Retsch PM200, Haan, Germany) prior to isotope measurements of d13C and d15N by EA/IRMS (ThermoFisher, Bremen, Germany)

We modeled forest productivity parameters by remote sensing metrics derived from a Landsat-8 image and four Aster elevation images in the mountain rainforest of Southern Ecuador. The validated model for annual litterfall accounted for 68 % in variation of productivity. The partial least square regression model has been predicted across the study area.
