Platform data

Spectral properties at leaf scale (Reflectance and transmittance) taken with a handheld spectrometer (Handyspec 14, Tec 5, AG. Germany). Leaves were placed over a tarp within a 1m2 frame and leaf area index measured manually.

The campbell meteorological station was used to monitor weather variables at the observation plot of the project B1 "The Threat of the Southern Bracken". Meteorological data was used as input in the Southern Bracken Competition Model.

Six observation plots of 3.14m2 each were installed randomly within the llashipa site in 2005 and leaf hight was observed in 4-week intervalls untill 2008

Each frond has its own frond number (SampleID), which is unique within the plot

Composition of bracken species: ca. 70% Pteridium arachnoideum, 30% Pteridium caudatum

Conclusion of the control experiment: 
-Spraying with Combo is the most efficient, low cost- and least manpower-requiring treatment. 
-On the other hand, the commonly used concentrations of this herbicide resulted in high mortality rates of all other components of the vegetation.
-Half of the application rate of Combo in combination with cutting reduces the impact on other vegetation dramatically, but is still highly efficient with respect to bracken.
-Black-foil & cutting, or cutting alone proved as the best method for bracken control if herbicides are not allowed and other vegetation should be preserved.

Treatments:
Asulam	with 400g/l active agent: 6l/ha
Glyphosat with 480g/l active agent: 4l/ha
Wilt Pruf with 25% active agent in solution: 6l/ha
Combo (PM) with 240g/l Picloram and Metsulfuron Methyl (60% p/p): 4l/ha

Cutting: only bracken leaves were cut, other vegetation remained in the plots
treatment combinations:
all treatments mentioned above were used in combination with cutting in alternating application
