Abstract:

Due to the significant impact of fog and low stratus (FLS) on economy, ecology and traffic systems, there is a growing demand for high-resolution information on FLS occurrence. In this study, a baseline climatology of FLS h day?1 based on data recorded from 2006–2015 by the Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager system (SEVIRI) aboard the Meteosat Second Generation satellites is computed for Europe to provide the requested information. It is the first 10 year, spatially explicit climatology for FLS based on data with a temporal resolution of 15 min. The dataset is validated against Meteorological Aviation Routine Weather Reports (METAR) and shows good accordance with an average Heidke Skill Score of 0.45. Temporal and spatial variations in FLS frequency as well as interannual trends are analyzed. Winter shows the highest FLS occurrence, but a general decrease over the investigated period. Spring, summer and autumn show less pronounced trends and lower average FLS frequencies. Possible reasons for these distributions are discussed.

Abstract:

A European fog climatology of fog frequency and fog properties which is based on a 10-years time series of NOAA-AVHRR data is under preparation. In this paper, preliminary results are presented. A fog map for 63 days provides a clear distinction of fog frequency in Europe: The pre-alpine basins reveal the highest fog frequency, a secondary maximum is observed for the river valleys of the lower mountain ranges and the fog minimum is located in the transition zone between the maritime coastal fog of the North Sea and the area of continental valley fog of the river valleys. The potential of VIS and MIR data for the calculation of fog optical and microphysical properties are discussed in the scope of a case study.

Abstract:

[1] Previous studies of clouds over the Tibetan Plateau (TiP) were subject to limitations. Surface observations are scarce, and satellite retrievals are not well adapted to the peculiar conditions of the TiP. For the most comprehensive existing cloud data set, provided by the International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project (ISCCP), issues were reported for the TiP. It also lacks sufficient spatiotemporal resolution for this topographically complex region. With the Indian Ocean Data Coverage service, European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites provides a Meteosat data set between 1998 and 2008. The resolution of around 6?km at the study area is sufficient even for complex terrain. Based on this data set and on products of the active sensor onboard CloudSat, we develop a novel gross-cloud retrieval for the TiP using logistic regression models. The approach maintains the original Meteosat resolution. Validation against independent CloudSat data reveals good performance. The approach also outperforms the ISCCP pixel level (DX) data set. The resulting data set is the first for the TiP that provides cloud information with sufficient resolution for both day and night. Patterns of cloud frequencies during winter, premonsoon, and monsoon seasons are analyzed. Strong diurnal forcing is found for the plateau. Peaks of cloud frequencies above the slopes occur during afternoon, while they are delayed in the valleys, where high cloud frequencies persist throughout the nights. Above the lower parts of the southern foothills of the Himalayas cloud frequencies were for the first time found to increase until the early morning. Katabatic flows are suspected to be responsible for this pattern by initiating the formation of mesoscale convective systems.
